A Question for Reflection: Why Marriage? ------ 1/5/2004 ------

Why we get married? What is the rationale behind marriage? Two questions each young man/woman has to ask before getting married.

Marriage is one the basic instincts rooted in the human being by God. Islam intensifies it, encouraging each Muslim to get married, and details, out of the importance, the whole matter of marriage from selecting the to-be-wife, the mutual intimacy between man and woman and the other matters related to the family institution.

Clearly, God does not put any regulations to His servants haphazardly. God does not forbid something unless it causes harmful effects to a man. Everything is considered wisely by God, and we may know the rationale behind it and may not.

Now, to answer the above noted questions, consider the following:

 Chasteness and Psychological Stability
Marriage gives a man/ woman the warm sociability and the stable living which can not be attained by any other pleasure or delight. What a happy life when a man finds the cozy companionship with a woman sharing with him the joys and sorrows, relieving the pain and sadness, giving the warm kindness and sympathy. How a happy woman when she gets married to a reliable man compensating her weakness and removing her natural fear.

God makes marriage a natural source for the chastity and comfort unavailable in whatever other social relationships. Man by nature has a tendency towards the other sex for the wisdom destined by God for the reproduction. A man can not attain chastity the physical and psychological stability without marriage. Physically, marriage discharge the inner energy; psychologically, it gives the peaceful living for a man and woman. In this regard, Allah says in Quran, And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect. (Ar-Room Surah-21).

 Reproduction

The good reproduction is one of the most significant reasons for ruling the marriage. We do not mean the reproduction that comes from other ways rather marriage- a fatal kind of reproduction that causes evil consequences to our societies, and we refuse it completely.

When a child is grown up in good socially environment ,i.e. within a healthy matrimonial relationship, he will be a good member in his society, a member of good productivity. On the other hand, the children born and grown out of a temporal whim, they will be unsatisfied with their societies and the humanity, causing a high rate of crimes and deviation, social corruption and psychological disturbances because they do not feel the mothers kindness and love or the fathers care, losing one of the most significant pillars of good socialization.

The observant of the open and libertine western societies will see undoubtedly the reproduction without marriage is a horrible evil infecting the society whatever the care houses are built.

God creates the man with an instinct of loving the reproduction; marriage is a natural reasons for satisfying this instinct.

 Getting the Prestigious Positions

Marriage is not just an honorable pleasure man gets whenever he/she wishes; it is, further , an honor and dignity. Of course, marriage gives a man and women a subtle prestige in the society, making him/ her feel self-importance and the necessity to be serious in ones life , disregarding the trivial. Marriage leads to heavy responsibilities for the men and women, and to the discipline in the family life. As the Prophet Mohamed ( may peace be upon him) said, All of you are shepherds, and each one of you is responsible for his/ her group. A man is a shepherd within his family and responsible for his group; a woman is a shepherd in her husbands home and responsible for her group.

This responsibility, this high rank, can be available in a suspicious temporal relationship based upon the forbidden pleasure vanished after a while. This kind of relationships give instant and vanishing pleasures, taking whoever practices them down to the level of the animals, suffering, thus, from the misery and sadness.

On recognizing the mutual duties and responsibilities, the husband and wife will far above the sheer instant pleasure, motivating both of them to the serious work and playing a proactive role within the society out of the self-esteem.

 The Allowable Pleasure
The physical and psychological pleasures have a great influence on mans soul, thought and physical and psychological strength. All mans instincts and energies go side by side in harmony when a husband and a wife are enjoyed true love and loyalty based on the mutual sympathy , passion and co-operation, not such animal tendency aiming at satisfying the libido and sensual desires in the absence of love and respect.

The feelings of the adulterers and adulteresses can not be of the same emotions felt by the married. The animal and sensual emotions are unlimited, and can not be satisfied. They are free from any feeling of respect and loyalty, on the contrary, full of the sense of disdain and insult for both the adulterer who committing a sinful act and adulteress for selling her body, beauty and natural tendency to sex. So, these feelings are contradictory and declining. But the feelings springing from marriage, on the other hand, are subtle and harmonious. The former gives psychological disorders, the corruptive manners, weak self-restraint and self-scorn, and the latter brings love, mercy, soul sublimity and alive conscience. In a nutshell, the marriage feeling is a construction, and the adultery feeling is a destruction.

For that reason, marriage is called in Islam a construction.

 Co-operation for Living

Life on the earth imposes on us to live in a society which is a big organization consisting of a basic unit called a person-man or woman. A man and woman cannot live in separation to the other, eve each other needs the others help. So, we can not set up a healthy society unless we build the its basic unit properly. One can not claim that a man the sole basic unit of the society; the family consisting of a man and a woman, is the basic unit of the good society. With co-operation between the couples, life can be existed. Accordingly, marriage contact is like a business contract that the two partners co-operate in taking the heavy responsibilities and overcoming life hardships.

Those are some of the targets one can attain from the bless of marriage.
