Use of inhaler during fast ------ 10/16/2004 ------

Question:
I have asthma, and I have to take inhalers twice a day. I want to know if I can still fast, and that my fast would be accepted if I take my inhalers throughout the day while Im fasting. I know that people who have health issues that require them to take medication are not required to fast; however, I feel healthy enough on most days to go ahead and fast, as long as I take my inhalers. I would appreciate it if you could clarify this for me.

Answer:
The following is an excellent answer that was given to this question by the late Sheikh `Abd al-`Azz bin Bz:

It is allowed for a fasting person to use an inhaler if needed. Allah says: He has explained to you in detail what is forbidden to you except under compulsion of necessity.

Inhalers are not in the form of food and drink. They resembles non-nutritive injections.

Allah knows best.
