Fasting
Fasting during Ramadan While Pregnant ------ 10/18/2004 ------

Question:
Assalamu-Alaikum! I am currently 5 months pregnant. I wish to know if I am to observe fast during the Holy Month of Ramadan? I have asked several sisters and they give different answers. I have looked both in the Qur\'an and in Sahih Al-Bukhari but am unable to find anything definite. If I am not supposed to observe fast for the health of the baby, am I to make up the fast at a later time?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

If the pregnant woman fears for her life or for the life of her fetus when she fasts, it is lawful for her to break the fast and make up later the same number of days she had missed to fast during Ramadan.
Then her rule is similar to the one of a sick person who can\'t fast fearing to harm himself. Allah says: \"But if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days.\" [1:184]

The same rule is true for breast-feeding women if they fear for themselves when they breast feed their babies while fasting, or if they fear a lack of breast feeding milk.
Some imams say that if woman\'s breaking the fast is not for the fear for her life, but only for the fear for the life of the fetus or for the breast-feeding of the baby, then she should make up the same number of days later and give an expiation of Mud (543 grams) of meal for each day.
Allah knows best.
