Between Makkah and Madinah
Kebb'a Mosque Throughout History ------ 12/13/2003 ------

Kebb'a mosque was the first mosque in the Islamic history our Allah's Messenger laid up its foundation by his hands after the immigration from Makkah to Al-Madinah. The Messenger's Sahaba (close companions) completed it, and the Prophet was accustomed to visiting it from time to time for praying, preferring to do that at Saturdays, and encouraging the Muslims around him to visit it. In a Hadith, Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said, "Any one who purifies himself by ablution at home, then goes for Kebb'a mosque and prays just one prayer, he will be rewarded as if he performed Umra". In another Hadith, the Prophet (may peace be upon him) said," Any one goes for this mosque (He means Kebb'a mosque) and prays just one prayer, he will be rewarded by the award of Umra".

The Muslims have paid great attention to Kebb'a mosque during the past times. Osman Ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) renewed it , and Omar Ibn Abd Al-Aziz exaggerated in decorating it, expanding its small space, and ordered to build a minaret to the mosque- the first one built in Islam. In 435 (Haj), Abou Y'ala Al-Hussainey renewed it for the second time, and some of the noblemen and good doers did the same in the years 671, 733, 840 and 881 (Hai). During the Ottoman Empire, the mosque was renewed several times; the last time was during Sultan Abd Al-Majjeed.

In the Saudi era, Kebb'a mosque has gained great attention; its external walls have been renewed, and its northern space was extended in 1388 (Haj). The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Fahd Abdul Aziz, ordered to re-build the mosque and extend its space, without changing its archeological and heritage features.

This mission was commissioned to the Saudi Bin Laden Group. The mosque was demolished, and the surrounding lands were added to the old space. The designers kept the old design of the mosque, doubling its sole minaret to 4, each one is 47 high. The mosque is designed to take the shape of corridors in the northern and southern directions, separated by an open lobby for praying. The two corridors are linked through another long two corridors. The roof is consisted from a group of the linked domes, each of the big 6 of them are 12 meter in diameter, while each of the small domes ( 56 domes) are 6 meters in diameter. All the domes are based upon arches standing on big columns inside each corridor. The ground and lobby of the mosque are covered by a special kind of marble which can reflect the heat. The lobby has automatic umbrella whose cloth made of the glass fibers. The umbrella can be opened and folded automatically if necessary. The space dedicated for praying is now 5035 square meters; the whole space occupied by the mosque, calculated with the related utilities, is 13500 square whereas it was 1600 meters square before the extension.

Moreover, the mosque is attached by a library and market for serving the visitors. It is noteworthy that the process of the restoration was finished in a record time, just one year, because the work was around the clock.
