iPhone 16 unveiling: Everything you need to know
On September 9, Apple introduced its new entry-level model at the latest Apple event, along with the iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The iPhone 16 series include four models:
The four devices are among the best iPhones ever. They come with new buttons, redesigned cameras, and Apple Intelligence features that could make them some of the best AI phones of 2024 (as Tim Cook noted on stage, they’re the “first iPhones designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence”). Below, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the iPhone 16, from its price and release date to its new hardware and software.
iPhone 16: new features
- Vertical cameras for spatial video capture
- New Action Button
- New Camera Control button
- New A18 chipset
- Will get Apple Intelligence features in October
Design-wise, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus may feature vertical camera arrangements at the rear, a departure from the diagonal camera layouts seen in recent models. This adjustment is likely intended to facilitate the capture of spatial video, designed for use with Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
In terms of camera technology, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max could be equipped with enhanced 48MP ultra-wide cameras. Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro might also feature the 5X telephoto camera that was introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, no significant changes for the camera systems on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
All iPhone 16 models are to be powered by Apple’s 3nm A18 chips, with the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus likely receiving the A18 Bionic, while the Pro models will be equipped with the more powerful A18 Pro. These chips should offer better performance and improved battery life.

Camera System
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will feature a 48MP wide-angle camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The vertical camera layout will allow for the capture of spatial video, designed for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. The iPhone 16 Pro will have a 48MP main camera, a new 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 5X optical zoom, alongside advanced features like a custom IMX903 sensor and ALD anti-glare coating.
iPhone 16 colors
The iPhone 16 in Black, White, Pink, Teal, and Ultramarine. The confirmed iPhone 16 colors are Ultramarine, Teal, Pink, White, and Black.
For reference, the iPhone 15 launched in Yellow, Blue, Pink, Green, and Black, so Apple has swapped out three shades for new colors this year.
Hardware and Specs
We can also assume that the iPhone 16 comes with 8GB of RAM, up from 6GB of RAM on the iPhone 15. Why? Well, Apple hasn’t disclosed the new phone’s RAM capacity. Still, we know that at least 8GB of RAM is needed to power Apple Intelligence features, which we know the iPhone 16 has (albeit not until October, when Apple Intelligence will begin rolling out in beta).
Apple’s latest standard model is powered by the new A18 chipset, which marks a two-step jump over the A16 Bionic chipset inside the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. That’s a big deal since Apple almost always slaps its previous-generation top-end chipsets on its new standard. This year, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will each have their exclusive chipset instead of using the same ones as previous models.
The Camera Control button on iPhone 16
As mentioned, this new Camera Control button is joined by the old multi-purpose Action button on the iPhone 16, so the combination of the two features could make the new phone (or at least the iPhone 16 Pro) one of the best camera phones around.
Overall, the iPhone 16 series appears to be a significant step forward, with notable improvements in design, performance, and camera technology. With prices remain stable, it’s shaping up to be an exciting release for Apple fans.
